Phú Quốc
Laurel and I traveled back home to New England to see our families for Christmas. After two weeks away from Vietnam and over forty hours of travel logged, we were happy to return. We were even happier we had the forethought to book a short excursion to the island of Phu Quoc upon our return.
Some fun facts about Phu Quoc, courtesy of Lonely Planet’s guidebook on Vietnam:
Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand, 45 km west of Ha Tien in Vietnam and 15 km south of Cambodia. Its' proximity to these two countries has proved contentious.
Phu Quoc is claimed by both Vietnam and Cambodia. Cambodians call it Koh Tral.
The territory dispute compelled the Vietnamese military to build military outposts covering a vast portion of the island’s north side.
At 48km in length, PQ is Vietnam’s largest island, near to the size to Singapore.
